How the two words are related
Borrowed between the languages (or by both from a third).
Hebrew took this word from Arabic already in the Middle Ages, when Jewish scholars writing on mathematics used הנדסה for geometry; Modern Hebrew then made it the word for 'engineering', which is what handasa means in both languages today — spelled and pronounced almost identically, right down to the Persian-derived root (from andāza, 'measurement') that both languages inherited via Arabic. Arabic still stretches handasa to cover 'geometry' too; in Hebrew that sense now sounds dated (as in the הנדסת המישור of old school textbooks), so lean on the 'engineering' meaning as the safe one-to-one match.
