How the two words are related

Shifted meaning

Same root as a Hebrew word, but the meaning drifted over the centuries.

Arabic root

ر-ف-ف

Hebrew root

ר-פ-ף

Not just a look-alike: Hebrew רף (today mostly 'a bar, a level' — as in רף גבוה, 'a high bar') sits on ר-פ-ף, the same root behind רפרף 'to flutter, hover'. Arabic رفّ raff sits on the identical root ر-ف-ف, likewise starting from 'to flutter, hover' (compare رَفْرَفَ rafrafa, 'to flutter'). Something that hovers or juts out from a wall became, in Arabic, the everyday word for a shelf — and Hebrew dictionaries still list 'shelf' as a rare sense of רף too, even though מדף does that job today.
