Shifted meaning
Same root as a Hebrew word, but the meaning drifted over the centuries.
Arabic root
ر-ب-وHebrew root
ר-ב-הRoot ר-ב-ה 'to grow, increase' gives Hebrew רבה, 'be many, multiply', and ריבית, 'interest' — compare Quranic رِبًا (ribā), 'usury', from this very root. Arabic رَبَّى (rabbā) took the causative sense 'to raise, bring up': a parent makes a child grow, and تربية is literally 'the raising', i.e. upbringing or education. Hebrew חינוך, by contrast, is built on a different root entirely, ח-נ-ך (compare חנוכה, 'dedication').
