Arabic root

ج-ي-ب

No Hebrew relative — but a double twist: Hebrew כיס 'pocket' is the same ancient word as Arabic kīs 'bag' (see that entry), and jayb went global on its own. Arab mathematicians wrote the Sanskrit sine-word jīvā with the letters j-y-b; Latin translators read that as jayb 'fold, bosom' and rendered it sinus — which is why your calculator says sin.
