How the two words are related

Loanword

Borrowed between the languages (or by both from a third).

Al-Yūnān and יָוָן are not a native Semitic root but the same old borrowing into Hebrew and Arabic of Ionia, the Greek-speaking coast of Asia Minor closest to the Near East. יון already appears in Genesis as a son of Japheth; Arabic inherited a version of that very old name.
