How the two words are related

Loanword

Borrowed between the languages (or by both from a third).

Hebrew סומק is a loan of Arabic summāq — and the match with Hebrew's own ס-מ-ק, 'to redden' (הסמיק, 'he blushed'), is no coincidence. Arabic most likely took the spice name from Aramaic summāq, 'red', a cousin of that very Hebrew root, and sumac is exactly that rusty red. The Arabic look-alike root س-م-ق, 'tall, lofty', is unrelated. So the spice came home to a root Hebrew already had.
