How the two words are related

Shifted meaning

Same root as a Hebrew word, but the meaning drifted over the centuries.

Arabic root

د-ب-س

Hebrew root

ד-ב-ש

Arabic س regularly answers Hebrew ש, so dibs lines up letter for letter with דבש. That is not a coincidence: many scholars read the Bible's own דבש as date syrup as often as bee honey — dates were far more abundant in ancient Israel than wild hives — and Arabic dibs preserves exactly that original sense. Modern Hebrew narrowed דבש down to the bee's product alone; for date syrup it now says סילאן.
