Arabic root

ب-ذ-ر

Hebrew root

ב-ד-ר

Modern Hebrew's word for seed, זרע, is unrelated — but a distant, unexpected cousin hides in plain sight. Biblical Aramaic בְּדַר, 'to scatter' (Daniel 4:11), matches Arabic بذر consonant for consonant, with Aramaic ד answering Arabic ذ exactly as it does elsewhere (compare Aramaic דהב / Arabic ذهب, 'gold'). Hebrew absorbed that Aramaic root too, but kept only a figurative sense: בִּדֵּר, 'to entertain' — literally 'to scatter' someone's boredom — is the same root as 'sowing seed,' just broadcasting distraction instead of grain.
