Small Talk at the Office
Two colleagues catch up: work, family, weather, weekend plans

How is work in the new office?
maktab 'office' is root כ-ת-ב (Arabic ك-ت-ب) in the m-place pattern: a 'writing-place'. Hebrew cast מכתב from the same mold — and it came out meaning 'letter'.
- Raniaمُمْتَاز، لٰكِن الْعَمَل كَثِير هٰذَا الْأُسْبُوع.
ממתאז, לאכן אל-עמל כת'יר האד'א אל-אסבוע.mumtāz, lākin al-ʿamal kathīr hādhā l-usbūʿ.
Excellent — but there is a lot of work this week.
- Karimوَكَيْفَ الْعَائِلَة؟ الْأَوْلَاد بِخَيْر؟
וכיף אל-עאאלה? אל-אולאד בח'יר?wa-kayfa l-ʿāʾila? al-awlād bi-khayr?
And how is the family? Are the kids well?
walad 'child', plural awlād: root و-ل-د = Hebrew י-ל-ד, with the regular initial w→y shift. Hebrew even kept the older w- in ולד 'newborn'.

אל-ג'מיע בח'יר, אל-חמד ללה. אבני דח'ל אל-מדרסה האד'ה א-סנה.al-jamīʿ bi-khayr, al-ḥamdu li-llāh. ibnī dakhala l-madrasa hādhihi s-sana.
Everyone is well, thank God. My son started school this year.
madrasa — root د-ر-س 'to study', traditionally linked to Hebrew ד-ר-ש 'to seek, expound': a madrasa and a בית מדרש are cousins.
- Karimمَا شَاءَ اللَّه! وَالطَّقْس جَمِيل الْيَوْم، أَلَيْسَ كَذٰلِك؟
מא שאא אללה! וא-טקס ג'מיל אל-יום, אליס כד'אלך?mā shāʾa llāh! wa-ṭ-ṭaqs jamīl al-yawm, a-laysa kadhālik?
Mashallah! And the weather is beautiful today, isn't it?
- Raniaصَحِيح! مَا خُطَطُك لِنِهَايَة الْأُسْبُوع؟
צחיח! מא ח'טטך לנהאית אל-אסבוע?ṣaḥīḥ! mā khuṭaṭuk li-nihāyat al-usbūʿ?
True! What are your plans for the weekend?
- Karimسَنَذْهَب إِلَى الْبَحْر مَعَ الْأَوْلَاد إِن شَاءَ اللَّه.
סנד'הב אלא אל-בחר מע אל-אולאד אן שאא אללה.sa-nadhhab ilā l-baḥr maʿa l-awlād in shāʾa llāh.
We will go to the sea with the kids, God willing.
- Raniaيَوْم جَمِيل! أَرَاك غَدًا فِي الْمَكْتَب.
יום ג'מיל! אראך ע'דן פי אל-מכתב.yawm jamīl! arāk ghadan fī l-maktab.
Sounds lovely! See you tomorrow at the office.
ghadan is MSA 'tomorrow'; the street says bukra — root ب-ك-ر 'early, first', the same root as Hebrew בכור 'firstborn' and ביכורים. Hebrew בוקר looks tempting, but its ק points to a different root (ב-ק-ר; Arabic ك matches כ).
